Who We Are: The Electromechanical & Optical Systems Department of the Applied Physics Division at Southwest Research Institute conceives, develops, designs, and delivers specialized custom electrical, mechanical, and optical hardware system solutions to benefit the government, industry, and the public. Objectives of this Role: Create technical drawings and schematics, using SolidWorks or other CAD software, that illustrate the design and functionality of a design, product or system.Works closely with the technical staff to ensure that the project is developed according to the technical specifications. Including answering questions, providing guidance, brainstorming, developing concepts, developing designs, working with fabricators and troubleshooting.Manage technical documentation, including technical specifications, design documents, drawings and reports adhering to standards (such as ASME Y14.5, Y14.41, and internal standards).Be responsible for supporting coworkers and clients.Demonstrate a passion for learning and applying new technologies, skills, and techniques to advance our work and stay at the forefront of emerging fields.Effective time management, organization, and the ability to prioritize tasks are vital to ensure timely completion of design projects.Work with the team to prioritize workload, manage time effectively, and provide regular updates on the progress of designs and any constraints. Daily and Monthly Responsibilities: Review and prioritize projects, ensuring timely progress and adherence to deadlines.Develop and update technical designs, drawings, and schematics using CAD municate and collaborate with design teams to address requirements, offer guidance, and align project goals.Brainstorm, troubleshoot, and provide technical support to colleagues and clients as needed.Attend team meetings to discuss project updates, progress, and risks.Monitor industry news and advancements to stay informed about new technologies and best practices.Maintain and update technical documentation, ensuring accuracy and compliance with established department standards.Facilitate the fabrication and assembly of various mechanical, electrical, and optical systems for testing and delivery.Support and conduct testing of various mechanical, electrical, and optical systems and use Excel and other software to compile data. Report (written and verbally) on results of tests to project technical leads and management.Review project instructions, specifications, and drawings to develop system specifications, test procedures, and objectives for fabrication and assembly.Provide feedback regarding fabrication, tolerancing, working with vendors to get quotes and time estimates. Requirements: Requires a Associates or a Bachelors degree in CAD Tech, Electromechanical Tech, Optical Tech, Mechanical Tech, Engineering Tech, Certified in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA), App. Science, Mechanical Design, CAD Cert. other applied science or technology related fields.2-4 years: Related work experience: For candidates with Bachelors degree.6-10 years: Related work experience: For candidates with an Associates degree or equivalent combination of certifications and experience.Knowledge and experience in fabrication methods (including but not limited to: sheet metal, machining, casting, and welding) and reverse engineering is desirable. Experience in designing, fabricating, and assembling mechanical and electromechanical parts and systems is desired.2+ years: Management of technical documentation, including technical specifications, design documents, drawings and reports adhering to standards (such as ASME Y14.5, Y14.41, and internal standards) desired.A valid/clear drivers license is required.
