Job Description

The Assistant Director of Hospital Engineering and Plant Operations develops departmental policies and procedures and manages their implementation in accordance with departmental strategic objectives or initiatives. Assists the Director and SVP in planning, directing and managing the department and staff to assure quality service on a 24-hour basis. Promotes teamwork with all stakeholders to maintain internal and external customer satisfaction, and appropriate resource management. Assumes the role of Director in their absence. + Provides direction and supports the Engineering and Plant Operations staff and the overall building systems and equipment. + Develops and maintains a preventive maintenance program for all equipment, buildings, Central Plant, building and building systems. + Oversees the operation of all Life Safety Systems related to patient safety and Operations. + Oversees, administers, and modifies programs to maintain the physical plant, and equipment through effective utilization of personnel and materials in accordance with local, state and federal codes, and hospital policies / procedures. + Develops and maintains staff training requirements as required, and as needs change. + Maintains preventive maintenance program to keep the plant and equipment functioning in a safe and efficient manner. + All other duties as requested. Education: + Associate’s Degree in facilities related field, required. + Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Facility Management or a related field in the healthcare industry, preferred. + Trade school education and additional five years hospital experience may be considered in place of formal college degree. Experience: + Minimum seven (7) years of progressively more responsible experience, with minimum five (5) years at a managerial level, in a hospital, required. Knowledge and Skills: + Must have considerable knowledge of building code requirements, electrical codes, fire codes, and regulatory compliance requirements for The Joint Commission, CMS, DOH, EPA, NYSDEP, NYCDOB, FDNY, NFPA and other agencies. + Solid knowledge and trouble-shooting skills with: + Building Automation Systems + Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Systems + Domestic Hot & Cold Water Systems + Boiler/Steam Systems + Kitchen Equipment + Medical Air Systems, Medical Vacuum Systems, Medical Oxygen Systems + Candidates must have adequate knowledge of AutoCad, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook. + Skilled in data analysis, organization, and presentation. Computer skills including spreadsheet and word processing applications. + Ability to work effectively with all stakeholders including but not limited to physicians, administration, departmental directors and managers, nursing, and outside agencies. Strong leadership skills and work ethic. + Ability to handle multiple projects/tasks and to develop a self-directed work team. + Outstanding human relations and leadership skills, and the ability to function in a team environment. + Ability to be a Business Partner. + Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position. Licenses, Certifications: + Q-01 Refrigerating System Operating Engineer + EPA Universal License + S-12 Citywide Sprinkler System Maintenance + S-13 City Wide Standpipe System + S-14 Standpipe for Multi-zone System + S-95 Supervision of Fire Alarm Systems + F-98 Standpipe and Sprinkler System with Gravity Tanks + P-98 Supervise Fuel-Oil Piping and Storage in Buildings + G-17 Supervision of Medical Gases Bulk O2/NO2 + G-35 Operate of Air Compressor + OSHA 30 Physical Requirements: + Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day. + Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
