Reports to: Principal of Assigned Campus & Lead NurseDept. /School: Assigned Campus Date Revised: January 2021Primary Purpose:Implement comprehensive program of health services for campus. Provide health services to students. Promote health education and preventive health practices for students.Qualifications:Education/Certification:Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program orValid nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse ExaminersCertified by Texas Department of Health to conduct vision and hearing screening and scoliosis screeningCPR CertificationLicensed Vocational Nurse requiredRegistered Nurse preferredSpecial Knowledge/Skills:Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defectsStrong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skillsAbility to implement policies and proceduresExperience:Two years nursing experience, preferably in community healthMajor Responsibilities and Duties:Nursing ServicesProvide direct care utilizing professional assessment skills, the nursing process, and established school health protocols.Serve as health advocate for students and personnel.Notify parents/guardians of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached).Coordinate management system to administer medications to students at school. Administer medications according to district policy and procedures.Establish and implement effective procedures for mandatory screening programs. Make referrals as necessary.Instructional ManagementProduce and maintain appropriate and required records. Develop and coordinate evaluation of the campus health program and recommend changes.Plan necessary time, resources, and materials to support the goals of the campus health program.Participate in development of campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups.Coordinate with campus principal to accommodate temporary schedule changes and field trips.Provide instruction to faculty and staff as needed on health related topics.Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students.School/Organizational Climate/MoralePromote a positive caring climate..Use effective communication skills.Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents, and community. Establish and enforce standards of cleanliness, health and safety while following health and safety codes and regulations.Maintain a safe work environment.School/Organizational ImprovementCollaborate in the development and articulation of a common vision for the district.Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with students, teachers, parents, and medical and health care professionals as needed.Personnel ManagementComply with applicable personnel policies. Collaborate with other professionals regarding implementation of health-related Individual Education Plan (IEP) modifications.Participate on the Individual Education Plan Committees, crisis teams, and school committees as needed.Administrative and Fiscal/Facilities ManagementDevelop and monitor the campus nurse/health operating budget.Maintain accurate reports of daily and monthly student health records. Review and evaluate immunization records.Supervise and train nurse aide(s) and LVN(s) in clinic procedures and responsibilities according to district policy as required.Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on students on specific campuses.Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rules, State Board of Education rules, and board policy in the health services area.Student Management RelationsDemonstrate support for the district's student management policies and expected student behavior.Support the improvement of the attendance of students.Participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.Communicate regularly with principal, head nurse, school counselor, teachers, parents, food services, and other staff regarding student health services issues.Make home visits to help with student health problems as necessary with permission of the principal.School/Community RelationsServe as a liaison to the appropriate community agencies.Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage parent/community involvement.Maintain good rapport with parents, community, and school personnel.Professional Growth and DevelopmentAttend professional growth activities to keep abreast of health regulations/half Continuing EducationUnits should be in school health.Maintain certification in CPR, vision and hearing screening, and as a health screener.Model behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.Student PerformanceSupport the campus academic program to ensure success of students.Supervisory ResponsibilitiesIf student numbers require additional health professionals, direct the work of licensed vocational nurse (LVN) and assigned health clinic aide(s).Working ConditionsPhysical Demands/Environmental Factors:Maintain emotional control under stress. Exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases. Perform other duties as assigned.
