Working from home can be an excellent way to earn a paycheck but there are definitely some aspects of this type of arrangement that you will need to work past. It requires a high level of responsibility and the ability to learn processes on your own. There are many ways to land a work from home position such as freelance work or by applying for an in-house position. Whichever path you take to landing one of these jobs, here are some tips to survive the workday once you are on your way.
1.) Stay Connected
When you work from home you should make yourself available at all times. This can be accomplished through email, but you should be using other programs like skype, facebook, or other popular third party messenger apps to stay connected with your managers, clients, and coworkers. Work on having excellent communication skills. There are two major benefits to staying connected. First, it will look good to your management team when you are quick to respond to issues and other requests. Second, it will make your work day that much easier, because if issues ever come up you will have a direct line to those that can help you.
When you work from home you will be sitting around in your home office for extended periods of time. You need to exercise as much as possible. It helps with stress management and will break up the day if you get into a routine. If you have a dog, take it for a nice walk around lunch time. Whichever method you choose is up to you, but it’s an important step in the work from home arrangement.
3.) Change of Scenery
Occasionally working in the same spot every day can get dull. Consider visiting a coffee shop or library for a few hours. Most of them will provide wifi and you can set up a mobile office. As long as it doesn’t get in the way of your work productivity there should be no problem. Changing up your scenery every once in a while can have a positive effect on your overall work experience. Just make sure you are clear with your work where and when you will be working.
4.) Use Apps
Nowadays there are multiple smartphone and computer apps that can help boost your productivity and remind you of important events. When you work in a home office and spend your day alone it’s harder to remember everything since you won’t have coworkers to remind you. Use apps to keep your calendar organized. There are also apps that will help you multitask more efficiently, but the type of program you need will differ from job to job. Get online and see what’s out there—you will surely find something that helps. Streamlining your priorities can make a dramatic impact.
5.) Dress for Work
When you work from home, you need to get into a solid routine. It will help make your week go by more smoothly. Also, it will help from a psychological aspect. Shower up and brush your teeth at the same time each morning just like a regular commuter job. Ditch the sweatpants and wear something presentable. It will help boost your confidence and separate leisure from work. Being mentally prepared for the work day is just as important as being physically prepared. Get your head in the game and solid productivity will follow closely behind.
