Should I Choose a Career in Management?

Skills for a successful managerA manager’s job position sounds quite exciting. Management professionals are required almost in every industry. However, a career in management is not suited for everyone. Though this occupation is lucrative with handsome income opportunities, it also brings a lot of pressure and challenges. Before you want to join an organization as a manager or decide to pursue a career in management, it’s important to know whether it’s the right career for you.

Whether you talk about pay, power or status, a career in management provides you with all of these and much more.

A manager’s career has a downside also.

In order to make a well-informed decision as to whether you want to become a manager or pursue a career in management, you need to consider both the pros and cons of this occupation.

Pros and cons of being a manager:

Merits

Usually, it’s the managers that are the highest paid employees in an industry, company or organization. Since management is a highly challenging career, the income opportunities are also excellent.

For example, the average annual salary of a business manager is around $70,000. A restaurant manager, on the other hand, makes around $60,000 every year. An IT manager makes a lot more – $100,400 on an average. Likewise, most of the managerial job positions pay top salary.

Apart from income, a manager also has more power than those who work in their team of group. If you accept a management job position, you become the leader of your group. You have got to influence others. Managers also enjoy a high status in the society. The sense of achievement is also an important aspect of a manager’s job or management career.

Demerits

Though there are too many rewards that a manager’s career brings, it’s also a highly challenging occupation. Since you are the leader of your team or group, you are also accountable for their success or failure. While working on your own, you also need to act as a decision-maker. The decisions that you make as a management professional have an impact on the overall goals and success of the organization where you are employed.

Another important thing about a management job position is that you face a lot of competition. If you are unable to deliver results, the employer may quickly replace you with a better manager. At the same time, you have to take into account many legal and financial restrictions to avoid discrepancies.

Key Skills Required

If you want to step into a management career, you should also be aware of your unique talents, skills and inclinations. All successful managers have some skills or traits in common.

A manager’s skills include –

Leadership
Team Playing
Communication
Problem Solving
Business Management
Collaboration
Finance
Project Management
Relationship Building
Negotiation

If you plan to become a manager, you should make sure you have these skills or develop them as quickly as possible. If these skills come to you naturally, you may be well-suited for a career in management.
