The opening line will always play an important role in ensuring whether the reader wants to read the remaining part of the cover letter or not. If you really want the reader to have a closer look at your cover letter and your resume, you need to open it with a first sentence which is powerful enough to grab their attention instantly.

Keep the cover letter precise, short and sweet
An effective cover letter is always precisely written, much focused and short. Never try to fill out the letter with unimportant lines. Leave plenty of white space in the letter. Choose your sentences carefully and talk about only those things that make you deserving candidate for the job you are applying.

Tell how beneficial you are to the employer
The major role of a cover letter is to prove to the employer how beneficial you can be. In order to make yourself a suitable candidate for the job position applied, you need to do some homework on your own. Do some research on the whereabouts of the employer and what they are actually looking for in a candidate. Prove your suitability for the job position and talk about how you can bring benefits to the company. In a nutshell, you need to provide an answer to the employer's question - Why should I hire you?

Choose words that show your enthusiasm
Carefully select the words you use in the cover letter. Put in words that display how passionate and enthusiastic you are to work with your chosen employer. Let the employer know how very interested you are to join them. And remember to carry the same enthusiasm and passion when you are invited to a job interview.

Give the employer a call to action
To make your cover letter highly effective, you need to write it in a way that it becomes a call to action for the employer. What action do you want the employer to take? You need to really ask the employer what you want. Make a direct request to the employer by asking them - ‘I would really like to have the opportunity for a personal interview this week'. This is a call to action for the employer. At the same time, it also shows your passion for working with the employer.

Write enthusiastic concluding lines
Like the effective opening lines, the concluding lines should also be enthusiastic. In the concluding lines, you need to mention that you are really looking forward to getting interviewed at the earliest. Thank the employer in advance for providing you with this opportunity.
