Let us begin with the question: ‘Where do you see yourself ten years from now'? Visualizing which direction your career should take is easy. The difficult part is the planning what is required to set your career goals. Moreover, even when you know where you want to be in your career, you might have some doubts. It is only by eliminating those doubts that you can achieve clarity of purpose, the most important aspect of goal setting. The task of setting goals for your career requires careful thinking and effective planning.

Given below are some important career goal setting guidelines to help you obtain the work life that satisfies you the most.

Step #1. Make a Career Plan, Write it Down on Paper
Just thinking about your career goals and where you want to be won't help. Of course, the process of planning your career or setting goals starts with careful planning, but you do need to put it down on paper. When you write down the goals that you wish to achieve, it symbolizes seriousness. When you have your goals written down, it will keep reminding you that you really need to work harder to attain your set targets. For example, you can start with setting a yearly goal; that reminds you where you should be in a year.

While you are putting it all down on paper, you need to ask yourself a few important questions. Ask yourself what your long-term career goals are. What are those short-term activities that can help you reach your career targets? You need to think both mentally and financially while setting targets for your career. Your career plan will be based on answers to these essential questions. And this would be your first important step towards goal setting.

Step #2. Follow Your Written Career Plan - and Stick to It
So, now you have all your career goals in writing, right? The next step is to follow this plan and not deviate from it. Before you start pursuing those goals, make sure they are realistic. If you find your career goals large, you can always break them into smaller ones. Breaking large goals into smaller ones would them easily achievable.

Once you start achieving your short-term goals, you should be ready to reward yourself. Celebrating even the small successes in your career would boost your confidence and give you the much needed momentum to move on. Another important thing to remember is to find someone who will mentor you and help you through this entire journey of achieving your career goals. It is also a good idea to discuss your written career plan with those who you trust. Their feedback and suggestions can be valuable to you.

Continue to persist until you succeed. Just make it happen! Devote the time, energy and money required to achieving your goals. Do not deviate from your career path. Stick to it and continue to move on.

Step #3. Review Your Career Plan and Update It
While continuing on your path to achieving your career goals, you will come across many types of hurdles which may discourage you. Don't ever let these roadblocks discourage you to deviate from your career path. Another important thing to keep in mind is that you should review your career plan periodically. Depending on some specific changes, you may need to adjust your goal plan to make it more effective. You will need to make some adjustments in the plan when you find out it is not taking you to where you wanted to be. Rethink about those short-term activities which don't seem to be helping you in your journey of career success.

Goals are set to achieve. But they should not stop you once you have achieved them. As soon as you have achieved your planned career goals, extend them even more. Reward yourself at each of your achievements. Repeat the entire process of setting goals and planning your career to obtain your new targets. After all, career success is a journey of a lifetime.
