Employers and hiring managers receive hundreds for resumes for a single job posting. All it takes to be out is just one mistake. Bear in mind, that employers these days don't happen to be quite forgiving. If you wish to land more interviews and increase your chances of getting hired, you should be well informed of the resume mistakes that you need to avoid. Even if it is just an entry level job position, employers are very selective. You may be a recent graduate with an excellent GPA and internship experience. But to hit the bull's eye, you need to know how to craft a resume that is free from mistakes.

Even if you happen to a good match for the job, one resume mistake can throw waters on your entire candidacy. Given below are some of the most important mistakes that you need to avoid while making that winning resume.

#1. Not Including a Personalized Cover Letter
A cover letter is the soul of a job application. Don't make the mistake of not including a well written cover letter along with your job resume. Know how to write a cover letter, as it is your opportunity to inform the employer why you are applying for the job and why they should hire you. A personalized and well written cover letter will immediately stand you out from the crowd of other applicants who were too lazy to include a cover letter with their resume.

#2. Failing to Research the Company or Potential Employer
One of the biggest mistakes that applicants make is not investigating the whereabouts of their potential employers. With a little research, you can find information about the company and the hiring manager. This information would be extremely valuable for creating a well targeted resume and crafting a personalized cover letter addressed to the hiring manager or the employer. The research you do will certainly reflect both in your resume and cover letter. It is display your initiative and research skills to the employer or company you apply to.

#3. Omitting the Spell-check
Many applicants don't bother to spell-check their resume. This is a big mistake. Hiring managers are just fed up with receiving job applications that have their names misspelled. If you want to attract the attention of the potential employer, you should remember to check your resume for spellings more than once. Spelling mistakes in cover letters and resume make a really bad impression on the hiring manager or the employer, ruining your chances of being considered for a job, even when you are a great fit for it. Scrutinize the sentence constructions, verb agreements, word usage etc. Make your application entirely error free.

#4. Not Having a Professional Email Address
Most of the job applicants even today make the mistake of including an unprofessional email address on their resume. Remember, every single element of your job application is meant to project a professional image of you. If you include an unprofessional email address bigbee@email.com or findouter@email.com, it will create doubt about your professional image in the mind of the employer or the hiring manager. Don't ever make such mistakes. They will badly reflect upon your image even if you have everything else on the application in place.

#5. Listing Inappropriate References
Job applicants need to take extra care while including references on their resume. One of the biggest mistakes in a resume is including references that may not know you well or that may not be available if you employer wants to call them. Think for yourself what kind of impression it will create if the employer calls one of your references only to find them sleepy. If employers find your references inappropriate, they will cancel your candidacy immediately. Therefore, think carefully who you would like to list on the resume as your references.

#6. Lying in Your Resume or Job Application
Many job applicants will see no harm in inflating the number of people they manage or lie about other skills or things on the resume to enhance their chances of getting the job. Don't make such mistakes. Employers will come to know of such things and then they will immediately cancel you candidacy for the job position. In case you lack some necessary skills, take some additional classes or courses so that you are true to every word on the job resume. Don't ever make the mistake of trying to project yourself in a way which you are not.

There's no doubt that the current job market is quite competitive. But if you remember not to make these mistakes, your resume will have a better chance of getting noticed. You will be able to set yourself apart from other applicants and make the most of your resume and the job application.
