How to Find the Right Internship Program

Published in student internshipsinternship programsgraduate internshipsfind internships by jamestomerson |

As the job market gets more and more competitive, employers are on the look out for candidates who have some additional real world experience. To enhance your chances of landing jobs, you can avail of multiple internship programs. Students can find internships, both while continuing education and after graduating from college. To find internship programs that are ideal match for your individual requirements, you need to follow a 3-step process which includes determining your internship goals, fine-tuning your job search skills and tracking down internship resources.

Determining Your Internship Goals
For obtaining the right internship, you need to first determine your goals. To begin with the process of determining your goals, you can ask yourself a couple of questions. What are you particular career interests? Why are you looking for an internship and how are you going to benefit from it? What type of organizations have you targeted? Which industry serves your need the best? Are you ready for both paid and unpaid internships? Answering these questions may lead you to landing the ideal internships. You may be looking for high school internships, graduate internship or an internship related to your field of study. Possible reasons behind obtaining internships may include learning new skills, expanding your professional network, adding working experience to your resume or obtaining some real world experience to land full time job positions with your targeted employer.

Internships can be either paid or unpaid. In fact, majority of these programs will be unpaid. So, you need to decide whether you can afford to obtain internships that do not pay. Another thing to be noted is that paid internships happen to be more professional, as the employer will want to get the worth of their money from you. However, students should be ready to find and consider both paid and unpaid programs.

Fine-tuning Your Job Search Skills
Since employers are preferring candidates with prior working experience, you may face a lot of competition finding the internship which is right for you. In order to land an ideal program, college students, high school students and other aspiring candidates need to polish their job search or job hunting skills. Whether it is about writing the cover letter, writing the perfect resume or getting prepared for job interviews, students need to fine-tune all of these skills in order to land the right internships for career development and success.

Tracking Down Internships Sources
When you have gotten through the first and the second step, it is now to time to use multiple sources that help you find an ideal internship. But where do you find these programs? Well, there are a number of sources for these. What's important is to find a program that matches your career goals and requirements. Given below are some of the most important internship sources.

Career Counseling Centers
Department Offices (major and minor)
Professional Networking
Career Fairs
Employers' Websites
Internship Websites
Print Materials (books and periodicals)
Alumni Office
Cold Contact or Cold Calling Method

College students, high school students and other candidates can make use of all the above mentioned sources and more. If you are attending a college, you can check out whether your college is going to organize a career fair during the academic year. You can also attend other career fairs. Before visiting the fair, be prepared with tips on how to make the most of a job or career fair. Alumni offices and department offices are also good sources of finding an ideal internship.

Your work is not done even after you have found the right internship program. Just as you do during a job hunting skills, you need to follow up with the company you have targeted or applied to obtain internships. Following up companies does not mean you have to call the companies every day. If you have had an interview with an employer, follow them up with a brief thank-you letter. After you made an initial contact with a company, you can also follow up with a phone call. Persistence is the key to finding an internship which is an ideal match for you.
