There are a variety of on-the-job and off-the-job perks that make employees stay longer in their jobs. Different employers offer different types of benefit programs to attract employees. In this article, we are going to discuss about the benefits that lure more and more employees. Knowing about these benefits will also help employers to retain their employees. Considering the tough job market and the retention rate of employees, it has become a major issue for employers to offer benefit programs that attract a large number of employees to their companies.

 

What's the idea behind offering good benefit program to employees? Well, employers offer various types of benefit plans to help employees protect themselves and their families from the hardships of the tough economic situation, loss of employment, loss of life and disabilities among other emergency situations. Employee benefit programs also ensure good retirement benefits for employees.

 

Benefit Plans Offered by Employers
Most of the employers include employee benefits as an inherent part of the total compensation package that they offer employees. In many cases, contributing small premiums can entitle employees to enjoy more benefits. These programs are offered to workers for a variety of reasons. Some of the most important reasons behind offering these benefit programs are as follows.

 

To increase employee retention
Aligning benefit packages to compete with the marketplace
To boost morale of the employees
To provide promotional opportunities to employees

 

Employers do not offer these programs for the entire benefit of employees. These benefits programs are offered to meet the employer's objectives as well. Employee benefits offered by employers can be broadly categorized into mandated and optional benefits.

 

Mandated Benefits
These benefits are those programs that are mandatory as per the law. These benefits are sponsored by the state or the federal government. These programs are aimed at assisting the employees fulfill their most essential and basic requirements. Mandated employee benefits may include unemployment insurance, social security and worker's compensation.

 

Optional Benefits
Apart from those that are required by the law, there are various other optional benefits that employers provide their employees. Though these benefits or perks are not mandatory, they are important in terms of retaining employees. Examples include life insurance programs, healthcare insurance programs, disability insurance programs, retirement plans and paid holidays among others. There may be a number of other optional benefits offered by employers.

 

Benefits That are Valued by Employees
It is very important for employers to know the most valued benefits of employees. For example, retirement plan is something which is valued by almost every employee. According to a survey conducted recently, the most valued benefits by employees include retirement or pension plan, savings plan, healthcare benefits, life insurance, long-term care insurance, wellness programs, flexible spending accounts and childcare subsidies.

 

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, commonly offered benefit programs for employees include life insurance, vacation pay, medial pay, retirement plans, education support programs, employee assistance programs, healthcare reimbursement programs, travel insurance, accident insurance, subsidized commuting programs, adoption assistance and stock options among others. Luxurious benefits are offered to a lesser percentage of employees. What benefits employees receive will depend on the geographic location and the nature and size of the employer. The level of job position will also play an important role in this regard.
