The field of culinary art opens many avenues to those who are really determined and wish to make an exciting career in the field. Besides the fact that culinary field has in store great career options, it also offer positions that help you better and butter you cookery skill as an entry level chef.  Job Description

As a culinary professional, a sous chef performs as an assistant to the chef e cuisine or the executive chef. The sous chef has the duty to assist the executive chef wherever the latter goes to supervise production. The sous chef may be required to function with the chef de cuisine at different locations and on different occasions. Apart from basic duties like food production, assisting personnel and quality maintenance, the sous chef also has the duty to help the executive chef with the inventory, costing and with deciding the menu. Safety and sanitation task are also included in the routine of a sous chef while he works as an assistant to the executive chef or the chef de cuisine.

 

Looking at the roles and responsibilities of a sous chef, they can also be referred to as second in command. Since the executive chef has to see to a number of administrative tasks, the sous chef should have the capability to manage the activities in the kitchen in the former's absence. It is not so that there is only one sous chef in one kitchen. In fact, sous chefs can be multiple depending on how big an organization is. Taking up the career of a sous chef in the food industry requires a lot of hard work and dedication. It can happen many times that the sous chef has to work under pressure, attending respectfully to the customers.

 

While you plan to become a sous chef and join the food industry, you should be well informed that life in kitchen is not as easy as it looks from outside. The kitchen is hot and crowded with assistants, kitchen attendants and chefs all the time. Activity in the kitchen starts much before customers actually arrive in the restaurant for dinner. Food items like soups and sauces have to be cooked in advance. To keep pace with the hectic routine of the kitchen, the sous chef needs to make use of innovative skills. He needs to be creative and quick in working out food solutions.

 

Those who aspire to join the food industry as a sous chef are required to earn a degree from an accredited culinary art school. One can also plan to make some important contacts in the culinary business and gain some experience while working there as an assistant. With some experience under your belt, you can really look forward to take up the position of a sous chef in a large organization and shape a successful career. If you go for a formal degree to culinary schools, you will need to spend 2-3 years for the completion of your course. You can either go for a vocations course or even earn a bachelor's degree. Internships or apprenticeships are an essential part of the culinary education that a sous chef needs to have. These internships programs help to finetune the culinary skills of the sous chef and they can look forward to landing a job soon.

 

During their internships programs, sous chefs can polish their skills in many areas or activities of the kitchen. Apart from gaining good knowledge in food preparation, the sous chef needs to fine tune his skills in kitchen safety guidelines, supply knowledge, soups and sauce preparation and kitchen equipment. While functioning as a sous chef, you not only get to learn from senior chefs but also have the responsibility to train those employees that work under you. A sous chef shouls be quite active in following instructions given by the chef de cuisine or the executive chef.

 

Job Opportunities for Sous Chefs

The culinary industry is expected to be in constant need of culinary professionals through 2012. This is also expected that there will be touch competitions for getting positions in large kitchens and well established organizations. Those who would have both a good academic background and the added advantage of successful apprenticeship will reap more benefits.
