How to Fight Your Career Fears

Published in career success tipscareer planning tipscareer planningcareer placementcareer goalscareer developmentcareer counselingcareer consultants by jamestomerson |

There is always an action plan that makes a career successful. There are many important decisions that need to be taken. There are hurdles that you need to get over while you work towards your career planning and development. But, do you have any idea what the biggest hurdle in your career can be? It is fear, the single most deliberating factor, that happens to be the biggest obstacle in an individual's professional career. Fear keeps us from making important career decisions and grabbing career development opportunities. Not only in your career but in your life in general as well, fear may keep you from achieving your goals.

You might have faced some situations where you wanted to do something or make a career decision, but you did not take any action only because you were afraid. And when you finally did that or took that decision you discovered that there wasn't much to be afraid of actually. The worse of it may be that you did not just take any action and realized only later that your fear had no base. Take a closer look below the surface. You will find that it is fear that blocks people's aspirations and their career planning and development .

Fear can vary in terms of objectivity. You can face a ‘fear of failure', ‘fear of success' and most commonly the ‘fear of what ‘they' will think'. The sole reason behind our thinking that we can not handle what comes up is the fact that we tend to make the ‘object of fear' bigger than it actually happens to be. Sometimes, this fear arises because we make an unrealistically low assessment of our talents and abilities.

Yes, fear is natural to all of us. It is a positive thing when it helps an individual to steer clear of problems that they can avoid. Fear becomes negative only when you let it take the front seat and let it take control of the steering wheel.

Given below are some tips on how not to let fear take the steering wheel, how to fight your career fears and be successful -

Check Your Assumptions & Beliefs
Most of the time, we give rise to fear on the ground of our beliefs and how we assume things. We really need to check out those lenses through which we see the world and make assumptions. As we limit ourselves to assumptions, it gives rise to fear-based stories. And these fear-based stories act as one of the biggest hurdles both in our career and life. How we view the world and assume things becomes almost customary to us. We do not even allow ourselves to figure out or find what other valid realities can be there.

Therefore, whenever you have a feeling like ‘I can't because...', do not accept it automatically only on the basis of your beliefs. Ask yourself questions why you can not do it. More importantly, are those reasons valid? Unquestioned negative beliefs can really add fuel to your fear, creating roadblocks in your life and career. Do not let it happen if you want to climb up the career success ladder.

Garbage in, Garbage Out
If you feed your mind with negativity, you will have only negative thoughts. So, be careful with the input. Are you spending too much with people who keep talking about things negative and keep giving reasons why dreams are not realistic. Remember, it has a great impact on your mind depending on the kind of people you spend your time with. Do not let yourself surrounded by fear focused people or people who are filled with negativity.

Use Your Fear for Navigating the Path to Your Career Success
How do you like the idea of putting your fear to use and getting it work for you? The best way to fight career fear is to use it for the better. Instead of seeing your fear as a dead end or a roadblock, use it as a departure point for brainstorming possible solutions. Remember, fear serves a purpose. Fear gives you a signal to avoid a negative outcome. Be ready to use it rather than being controlled by it. When you see fear as it signals a negative outcome, ask and think about what can help you avoid this negative outcome. If you have control over your fear, you can turn it into a wonderful tool to help you navigate the path to your career success and dreams in life.

In order to gain an extra edge over our competition, we need to equip ourselves with as much information as we can possibly gather. Looking at job competition that we all face today, it has become necessary to keep adding to our skill sets and go for further training depending on our specific job or career requirement. We need to attend seminars, conferences and workshops as well as keep expanding our network with people employed or connected to a particular field.

While we go for training and acquiring more skills, there are a number of things that need to be considered. It is not just about the organization and out time management skills, but things like risk taking, stress management and problem solving also have equal importance in terms of achieving career goals. All of these are necessary ingredients for continued career development.

Why is career planning so important?
Candidates and jobseekers should always keep in mind that career planning is not a one-time process. In fact, it's a process that should continue throughout one's professional career for continuous career growth and development. Career planning does not only refer to making plans but making adjustments to keep pace with the changing job trends. To keep up with the changes required in your career, the process of career planning needs to be repeated.

While you set up goals, you also anticipate some barriers which can be overcome through successful career planning. People who are dissatisfied with their careers or jobs can find effective solutions through planning. The most important thing about planning your career is that it keeps you motivated and focused towards what you want to achieve in your professional life. Career planning gives you complete control over your career and life and boosts your confidence. Career development should never stop and so should the career planning process.

Facilitating successful career change

Published in studentscoursechanging careerscareer planning tipscareer planningcareer counselingcareer changecareer by admin |

People think of career change due to many reasons. Career change is more than just switching over to new kind of job or searching for a new employer. Career change may bring in high salary for you but you must be prepared to compromise on your first salary after career change. A deep deliberation over the reasons of career change is required for a successful career change.

Reasons for career change

Career change does not require a particular reason. You can go for career change anytime you feel you should. Following are the probable reasons for career change.

  • Enthusiasm to earn more money is the most prominent reason for career change in twenty first century. If you see that one of your friends is earning more than you then you may feel inspired to adopt his career in the hope to earn more.
  • Frustration from your present career can also inspire you to seek career change. If you cannot get a job according to your expectation then you may get frustrated.
  • People, who are working just to earn bread and butter, may consider a career change after becoming financially strong.
  • Sometimes friends and family members try to persuade you for a career change. They assume that you can excel in life if you go for a career change.
  • It is analyzed that ratio of career change is higher in young generation than adults. People in their young age are more involved in career change because they get impressed or frustrated quickly. Young people have more time to invest in career change than the adults.

Planning before career change

Whatever the reason may be for your career change, you must remember that you have opted for your present career. Moreover, a career change does not mean happiness forever. Ask yourself why you opted for present career and why do you want career change? You may not need a career change after getting the answer to these questions. If you still want to go for career change then take some careful steps.

  • In your new career, you will start searching for a job as a fresher and not as an experienced person. It may take some months to you to get at least a job. You must strengthen your financial position before career change.
  • Every career needs some sort of training. You should join an online institute for training. You can study online without loosing your present job.
  • Gather as much information as you can on the career you want to join after career change. It will help you to differentiate between your present and future job.
  • Try to locate your career change goals in your present organization. If you are successful in doing this exercise then you will escape the hurdles of searching a new job.
  • Start making plans for career change months before you actually change your career. You should start searching for new career as you did last time to search your present career.

It is advised from expert career counselors that doing career change for wrong reasons or on impulse leads to resentment. You may not feel happy with the career you are going to choose. If you are unsatisfied with your present job then do not blame your career. Just a job change can save you from career change.
