Every employee takes a person-centered approach that exemplifies the ICARE values (Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence) through empathic communication and partnerships between all persons.Job DescriptionOrganizes appropriate supplies and equipment.Greets patients in a friendly, tactful manner and explain the purpose of the specimenIdentifies patient by using at least two identifiers: Name and Date of BirthIdentifies proper specimen to be drawn via providers' orders through EpicAssembles all required equipment near drawing area.Guides patient into safe position.Checks arm for suitable veins: use other arm, if necessary.Applies tourniquet; do not leave on for an excessive amount of time.Selects vein, palpate and traces path with index finger.Cleanses venipuncture site with alcohol."Anchors" vein and smoothly inserts needle with bevel up.Smoothly pushes evacuated tube into holder without hanging the needle position.Calmly changes position of needle if blood does not flow.Releases tourniquet when blood starts to flow.Fills tubes in correct order.Removes last tube from holder before withdrawing needle.Withdraws needle from arm smoothly.Applies pressure to site after withdrawing needle.Disposes of needle properly and carefully.Mops all tubes gently five times.Checks site to ascertain bleeding has stopped.Process and label tubes from wristband (inpatient) or providers' request via Epic (outpatient):Patient's last name and first name.Patient's identification numberTimeDatePhlebotomist's initialsOther information required by the institutionClean up all supplies and waste and discard in appropriate containersAttends trainer activities provided by the institution and participates as a trained trainer in laboratory competency activities.Understand and practice the elements of the National Patient Safety Goals specifically to avoid Misidentification of patients.Understand and obey HIPAA laws specifically to protect the confidentiality of patient information.Minimum Qualifications1. Valid certification as a clinical laboratory technician issued by the NYSED.Special Note: 1.
