On the basis of this it issues its highly respected Gemmological Reports, which are relied upon by famous auction houses, royal families, jewellers, gem traders, and collectors globally who are looking for unbiased, independent and absolutely trustworthy opinions about their gems.What We're Looking ForThe Gübelin Gem Lab in New York is looking to hire a new lab technician to help run tests on gemstones and train to become one of our prestigious gemmologists.We're looking for someone with a gemmological background, interested in learning about gemstone origin and treatment determination, and who would be looking to grow with our NY office, first operating our machinery and eventually training to be a Lab Gemmologist.ResponsibilitiesThe lab technician is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all gemmological testing equipment. Technicians will:Operate XRF, UV-VIS and FTIR machines in the testing of gemstones. (training provided)Initiate startup and shutdown procedures on machinesOrganize workflow of gemstones throughout the laboratoryOrder supplies as related to machinesCommunicate with internal IT department and analytics department to make sure machines are running correctlyCommunicate with external service providers in case repairs are needed.Travel to trade shows and for training domestically and internationallyUndergo gemmology training, and learn spectral analysis (in time)QualificationsWe're looking for someone with a passion for gemstones, gemmology and geology with the following background:GIA or FGA qualified gemmologist certification or BS in GeologyKnowledge of gemstones, earth sciencesGemstone Laboratory experience a plusExperience with software such as MS ExcelSalaryThis is generally an entry level position with salary from 50k-65k depending on experience. We may be open to a more experienced gemmolgist as well.
