Job Description The Primary Care Service at Penn Vet is focused on teaching veterinary student's valuable clinical skills with relation to general practice veterinary medicine. Responsibilities: * Work collaboratively with interns and 4th year veterinary students while instructing them on proper restraint techniques and nursing skills such as venipuncture, cystocentesis, and vaccinesubcutaneous medication administration. * Sedation of patients when required. * Scheduling of surgical procedures. * Assist with Spayneuter surgeries by running the anesthesia. * Assist with non-complicated dental procedures (cleaning, polishing, and intraoral radiographs). * Knowledge of dental instruments and preparation for sterilization. * Instruct and assist 4th year veterinary students on basic skills like nail trims, anal gland expression, collection of ear and skin cytology samples and staining slides. * Draw up vaccinations as needed for each patient. * Client education and explain discharge instructions to clients. Assist students with these tasks. * Organize and oversee client callbacks and follow up. Students will also help with these tasks, but the nurse will need to oversee the process and follow up on cases when students are not available. * Stocking of all Primary Care service supplies, including vaccines. * Manage flow of cases during appointment hours. Alert studentclinician when a client has arrived. * Assist with animal handling and restraint using low stress handling techniques during physical exams and other procedures including blood collection. * Fill in the appointment charge sheet. * Creating instructional labs for students in multiple disciplines as it relates to primary care. These may include venipuncture, IV medication administration, anal gland expression, and cystocentesis. * Contribute to the Ryan Hospital Nursing Holiday Schedule as assigned by the Director of Nursing. Administrative Duties: * Check phone messages on Primary Care Service phone line. Return phone calls as indicated or relay message to student or clinician on the case. * Check email messages on Primary Care Service email. Return emails as indicated or relay message to student or clinician on the case. * Manage prescription refill requests. Reference patient record and notify clinician of prescription request. Once authorized by clinician, call client to notify himher on the status of the prescription. * Manage reminder cards for patient reminders. Mail cards each month with reminders for the following month. * Maintain rabies tag logbook and certificates. * Maintain SOP folder and update as needed. * Oversee completion of daily nursing tasks. * Manage inventory of supplies for the service. * Assist with orientation of the interns and students. * Submit Workday time sheet to the Director of Nursing by Sunday evening. Qualifications: * Must be a Certified Veterinary Technician. * Minimum 4 years of experience in a comprehensive private practice setting with strong skills toward anesthesia. * Fear Free certification required. * Excellent communication and interpersonal skills * Must have a passion for teaching. * Strong organizational skills essential Veterinary Technician C has 4+ years of veterinary experience Veterinary Technician D has 5+ years of veterinary experience Veterinary Technician E has 8+ years of veterinary experience +- VTS All must be certified. Targeted Pay Range: $20.45hr to $40.00hr. * Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
