The postbac will be mentored by Jordan Wickstrom, PhD, who is the Director of Clinical Research within the Rehabilitation Medicine department as well as the Principal Investigator (PI) of a pediatric motor development lab. The PI specializes in assessing infants and young children with typical and atypical development. As a developmental biomechanist, Dr. Wickstrom uses specialized equipment (e.g., force plates, pressure mats, wearable sensors, motion capture, eye trackers) to quantify movement patterns with the goals of (1) developing normative data for gross motor milestones, (2) diagnosing kids early in development by identifying patterns that are specific to a given population, (3) measuring changes in response to intervention that often go undetected by existing standardized assessments, and (4) helping children reach their highest level of physical functioning. Postbac Responsibilities Include: Assisting in data collections for pediatric research projects Gaining experience with IRB submissions, auditing procedures, and full-board reviews Creating and posting research recruitment materials Providing support for manuscripts, conference abstracts/posters, and scoping/systematic reviews Assisting with developmental assessment testing (e.g., Mullen Scales of Early Learning, Bayley Scales of Infant Development) Using various research equipment (e.g., wearable sensors, pressure mats, force plates, eye trackers) after being trained, and creating manuals for equipment use Developing an understanding of relevant literature to support departmental research (e.g., reading articles, participating in journal clubs, attending research club) Managing, coding, and analyzing data Administrative tasks related to research projects (e.g., scheduling participants, creating fillable forms) Structured opportunities to shadow clinicians of various disciplines (e.g., physiatry, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language therapy, recreation therapy, nursing, social work, vocational case coordinator) in a variety of settings (e.g., inpatient, outpatient) Trainees will also receive individualized guidance regarding the graduate school application and admission process. The program also supports the professional development of each trainee through: Clinical research experience Clinical shadowing experience Research education lecture series Clinical education lecture series Journal clubs (multiple opportunities by discipline) Special interest groups Opportunities for oral presentations (e.g., travel stipend to attend one conference in year 2) Personalized planning for the graduate/professional school application process Eligibility: Minimum Have completed a Bachelor's degree (e.g., BA, BS, BSc) (or will complete May 2024) in Biomechanics, Psychology, Kinesiology, Engineering, Neuroscience, or related discipline Have compelling reasons as to why additional research experience and professional development is needed prior to pursuing graduate or professional school A college graduate who received a bachelor's/master's degree within 3 years of beginning the program Preferred Formal research experience (e.g., assisted in a lab, involvement in data collections, presentation experience, publication experience) Experience with programming (e.g., MatLab, R) Experience with infants and young children, particularly in populations with developmental delays or impairments Work ethic: very detail-oriented, learns to anticipate needs (of participants, PI), passionate about helping people, strong writing and interpersonal skills, problem solver (makes multiple attempts to find solutions independently), thinks critically, efficient time management, displays a spirit of humility, strong ethics, receptive to feedback, cultivates a culture of inclusion (e.g., diversity, equity, accessibility), cognitive flexibility (e.g., adaptable to shifting timelines and responsibilities) Apply Now: Complete the online application which includes: A curriculum vitae A personal statement (max 2 pages single spaced) describing (1) your career goals, (2) why you need this postbac position in preparation for your next career step, (3) any relevant experiences you've had that prepared you for a postbac position (e.g., prior research experiences, teaching, tutoring, conference presentations), (4) why you are interested in this particular postbac position.   Additional Information As one of the largest health care providers in Maryland, with 13,000 team members, We strive to CARE BRAVELY for over 1 million patients annually.
