Six Tips for Creating a Fun Workplace

fun workplaceThe most motivated employees are the ones that see their jobs as a fun place to go.  Though they may encounter challenging moments throughout the day, if workers are happy enough with their jobs overall, they will be better equipped to handle whatever comes their way.  A relaxed and fun workplace is a more productive one for everyone.  On top of that, everyone tends to get along better and have more trust in each other when the environment is calm and carefree.  Though work should be taken seriously, that doesn’t mean that employees can’t engage in joy and laughter throughout the day.   Here are some tips for creating a more fun, relaxed atmosphere at your workplace:

1)      Make laughter a priority

Laughter releases endorphins that are important for overall health and happiness, and humor can get you through some of the toughest situations, in life and at work.  If you can learn to laugh with your co-workers, you find life to be even more worth living.  Don’t be afraid to engage in spontaneous humor when something funny happens at work, and share jokes and humorous stories that you come across with others in the office (as long as they aren’t offensive).  If you do this, chances are other employees will begin to do the same.

2)      Do something nice for someone

This can mean giving a compliment, sharing candy or another edible treat, or simply asking how your co-worker’s weekend or evening was.  Showing interest in others will take the focus off of yourself and any pressure you could possibly be feeling with your workload, and in turn will allow you to be a more fun person in the workplace.

3)      Create group activities for office staff

To bring coworkers together, consider forming a sports team, charity event or other group activity that will allow them to enjoy themselves and establish common ground in something other than their jobs.

4)      Involve customers in the fun

Fun in the workplace doesn’t have to involved only co-workers.  Clients and customers will respond better to employees that seem to enjoy their jobs.  Find fun and creative ways of engaging with them, by sending them entertaining company merchandise or including them on e-mail lists to keep them updated on positive things that are happening in the company.

5)      Don’t be tied to your desk

Approaching the workday will seem way more overwhelming if there is no break in sight and your scenery will not be changing all day.  It’s important to take a few breaks, walk around and get some fresh air.  Talk to someone on the phone, or treat yourself to ice cream or coffee.  It will help clear your mind so you can come back to your desk more focused.

6)      Recognize holidays and birthdays

Get festive and plan fun workplace activities for employee birthdays and holidays such as Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Fourth of July.  It will break up the monotony that can be felt in office life, and send co-workers the message that even though you are at work, life in the outside world still matters.
