Getting a job is tough in itself. For a teenager with little or no work experience, it’s even more difficult to land a job. There are, however, plenty of teens who want to get hired in different types of jobs to collect some pocket money or fulfill other necessary obligations. If you are in this type of situation, how are you going to get a job quickly? How will you prepare?
In order to beat out the competition for jobs you apply for as a teenager, you should abide by the following tips or guidelines.
Know Where to Search
Not every place is a good place to look for a job as a teen.Before you get started with the process of job search, you should identify those places where the chances of getting a teen job are high. Amusement parks, zoological gardens, historical museums, and hospitals are some of the best places where you can get a job as a teenager.
In addition, there are also many job websites where they feature different types of jobs only for teenagers. Find those teen job boards and start looking for jobs that will suit your requirements.
Volunteer
One of the best pieces of advice for teens is to start working as a volunteer. There are plenty of volunteering organizations where you can participate as a volunteer in one of your chosen fields. By being a volunteer, you’ll not only learn new skills and enhance your knowledge but will also build your professional network which will help you get a job of your interest.
Create a Resume
Writing a resume for a teenager is a big challenge. Since you have little or no experience, you may find it extremely difficult to put together a resume that impresses employers. Well, the best idea in this case is to create a skill-based resume and attract employers or hiring managers on the basis of the unique skills or talents that you carry.
Once you have written the resume, get someone to review it so that you are able to eliminate common errors. Most of the teen resumes contain lots of language mistakes and don’t look professional. If you are able to get your resume reviewed by an expert and get it fine-tuned, you’ll win.
Use a Cover Letter
A cover letter is an important part of the job application process. If you want to land a job quickly, you should never forget to also write a cover letter which showcases your skills and talents. Also mention in your cover letter why a particular job is important to you and how much interested you are in doing that particular job. Again, you should make sure the cover letter is free from any kind of spelling, grammar or any other language mistakes.
Conduct Company Research before an Interview
Even if you have little or no work experience, you have yet another opportunity to impress employers. Before you sit with an interviewer or an employer for an interview, conduct adequate company research. You’ll easily impress the employer if you have good knowledge about their company.
Get the Word Out
Let everyone in your network know that you are looking for a job. There are several ways in which you can get the word out. You can place notice boards or flyers in your area showing that you are in search of a job. It’s also an excellent idea to use your network or professional contacts to let other people know about your job search. Posting your information on potential job boards or job websites should also work really well.
