You gather the list of commonly asked interview questions, try to find out the name and position of the interviewer, and conduct research on the whereabouts of the company you have applied at. In the midst of all these, there’s one thing that most of the job applicants would easily ignore – interview dress.

The kind of dress you wear for the interview has the potential of making or breaking your chances of winning it.

In the 1950s, wearing suits and ties to work was compulsory for men. But, with the passage of time, things changed. Today’s society is, therefore, not as conservative as it used to be, as far as dress code is concerned.

Still, what you wear to an interview should help the employer or the hiring manager form a good first impression about you. If you are going to attend an interview soon, you should never make the mistake of dressing too casually, as it will leave a bad impression on the hiring manager.

You’ve Got 30 Seconds!

While going for an interview to increase your chances of getting hired, you should never ignore the significance of the first impression. As soon as you step into the interview room, the employer begins to form a first impression about you by the way you have dressed yourself.

It takes 30 seconds or less to form a first impression. By the way you have dressed or how you appear, the interviewer can quickly assess your self-esteem, confidence, levels of extroversion, etc. In fact, the way you have dressed may also reveal to the interviewer how religious you are.

According to a survey, more than 30% of job applicants are rejected for hiring due to the way they dress for the interview.

What to Wear (and What Not to Wear)

It’s always wise not to fall prey to the dress code of the company or organization where you have applied for a job. For the interviewing process, you should always dress yourself in conservative clothes. Once you are hired, you are free to go by the dress code of the employer.

Whether you are a male candidate or a female candidate, you should pay careful attention to your dress or clothing so that you can make a good impression on the hiring manager and win them over.

For Men – Always remember to wear conservative clothes. Solid colors are highly recommended. Make sure the suit that you wear is of dark color. The shirt that you wear should be either white or any other light color.Socks should be dark in color, professional and well polished.

Attire along the lines of shirts, jeans, T-shirts and leather jackets leave a negative impression on the hiring manager. Therefore, you should always avoid wearing these types of clothes or attire.

In addition, you should always go for a simple, neat and professional hairstyle. Also make sure your nails are neatly trimmed.

For Women – Conservative suit goes for both male as well as females. Solid color always looks professional. Remember that the colors and styles of what you wear should co-ordinate really well. Avoid wearing colors like orange, red, and pink, as they are unacceptable during interviews.

When it comes to choosing colors for suits, it’s advisable to go with corporate colors like navy, black or grey. If you want to look your best to the hiring manager, you should avoid things like dangling jewelry, short skirt, bare legs and low necklines. When wearing shoes, you should follow moderation.

While dressing for the interview, you should always aim at looking elegant, well-groomed and professional.
