5 Signs Your Boss Doesn’t Like You, and How to Handle Them

signs your boss doesn't like youDo you find yourself feeling down on the job because you don’t get a positive vibe from your boss, and feel they don’t like you?  Not only is any relationship that doesn’t make you feel good about yourself hard to deal with, but you could also be anxious about the future of your job, which adds financial worry to the mix.  At the same time, everyone has their shortcomings and weak points and you could be taking certain behaviors personally that are no reflection on you whatsoever.  Here are some signs that indicate your boss doesn’t like you, and the best ways to deal with them:

1)  Negative body language

If your boss doesn’t make eye contact, never cracks a smile in your presence or seems hostile or uninterested in having a conversation with you whenever you approach him or her, it could be a sign that they have a problem with you.  But if you can, find out how they respond to some of your co-workers to make sure they just don’t have a bad attitude in general.

2)  They micromanage you

If your boss seems to be excessively checking up on you and obsessing about minor details involved in your job that you should be easily trusted with, it’s often a telltale sign that they don’t like you.  But again, make sure that this isn’t how they are with everyone that reports to them, and also honestly ask yourself if the quality of your work has been lacking, therefore giving your boss reason to respond in this way.   If so, work to change that, and talk to your boss to see if you can find a solution that allows your boss to be a little more hands off, while still being kept up to date on projects.

3)  They ignore you

If you never hear from your boss, he or she fails to ask your opinion on matters directly related to your job, or they regularly fail to include you in important company meetings, it can be a sign you aren’t highly valued.  It’s very likely, however, that they don’t even realize the extent to which they are doing this.  Have a discussion with your boss about improving communication and being more included in company meetings and decisions.  Be sure not to attack them or accuse them of having something against you, and also stress that the driving factor behind these requests is your desire to do your job as effectively as possible.

4)  They publicly humiliate and dismiss you

There is never a positive reason to publicly humiliate someone.  And everyone in the company should have an equal voice in meetings and discussions that are related to their job.  So if your boss puts you down or dismisses your ideas in front of co-workers, it’s a telltale sign that they don’t like you.  Bring the issue up in private to your boss, or look for another job.

5)  They don’t appear to care if you leave the company

A big sign that your boss doesn’t like you is if you receive a significant lack of encouragement, are denied pay raises without any explanation, and are continually given busy work and low-status tasks that no one else wants to do.  If this is the case for you, put together a record of positive accomplishments you have had that have helped the company, and use it to back up your value as an employee when you have a discussion with your boss addressing these issues.
